CARABAO CUP WIN LIFTS MOOD FOR WEST HAM

- By NICK METCALFE

WEST Ham put their miserable Premier League defeat to Newcastle behind them as they comfortably saw off Charlton 3-0 last night to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Hammers weren’t at the races in their league opener, but two goals in four first-half minutes from Sebastian Haller and a late effort from Felipe Anderson ensured there would be no upset against the League One side.

Haller scored his first from close range after being set up nicely by Andriy Yarmolenko, and soon after he headed home. Anderson then applied the gloss with ten minutes left to make it a satisfying night at the office for manager David Moyes.

Newcastle, who were impressive at West Ham, saw off Blackburn 1-0 with a goal on debut for Ryan Fraser.

The Scot, signed from Bournemouth in a five-year deal, was sent through on goal by Miguel Almiron and fired into the net after 35 minutes.

Jack Grealish, who yesterday agreed a new deal with Aston Villa, scored a superb late goal as the Premier League giants edged out Burton 3-1.

Villa were shocked by a goal after just two minutes from Colin Daniel. And the League One hosts pushed their illustrious opponents all the way.

But Villa struck back just before halftime with a strike from record signing Ollie Watkins on his debut, after some fine work from Grealish.

With three minutes remaining, Henri Lansbury floated over a corner, and Grealish drilled a volley into the ground, which flew into the net. Keinan Davis added a third in stoppage time.

Watford beat Oxford 3-0 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Ken Sema levelling for the Hornets with a minute left.
