I am immune, boasts Trump as he returns to campaign

- By DANIEL BINNS

DONALD TRUMP is returning to the campaign trail after his doctor claimed he is no longer contagious with coronavirus.

The US president is not considered a transmission risk by ‘currently recognised standards’ because tests had shown there was ‘no longer evidence of actively replicating virus’ in his body, according to a memo from his physician Dr Sean Conley.

But Dr Conley raised eyebrows on Saturday when he said the president had been ‘fever free for well over 24 hours’, which suggested Mr Trump’s temperature had risen again within the previous day.

Mr Trump took to Twitter yesterday boasting he had been given ‘a total and complete sign off’, adding: ‘That means I can’t get it (immune), and can’t give it. Very nice to know!!!’

The tweet was later flagged by Twitter for ‘spreading misleading and potentially harmful information’ about Covid-19.

His diagnosis came hours after he removed his mask on a White House balcony and told supporters: ‘I’m feeling great.’ He was seen with a plaster on his right hand, causing speculation that it could be from an IV drip.

Mr Trump spent four days at Walter Reed Medical Center. He had considered acting frail when he left before ripping off his shirt to reveal a Superman top, reports The New York Times.

His campaign team has planned rallies in Florida, Pennsylvania and Iowa this week. A Washington Post and ABC survey has put Democrat Joe Biden at 54 per cent and Mr Trump at 42 per cent.

Meanwhile, vice-president Mike Pence provoked controversy at a retirement village in Covid-ravaged Florida. He drew a crowd of 3,000 people – most had no face masks and were not socially distancing.
