Metro (UK)

What the hell is wrong with you lot?

- Anne, Derbyshire

I’m writing this on a London Overground train from Honor Oak to Whitechapel on Tuesday morning.

I’m nearly three months pregnant and wearing my badge because

I want people to keep one metre away – but they won’t.

I waited quite a while for a seat to become available that had one empty on each side and, at exactly the next stop, someone comes to sit right next to me. What is wrong with people? Have people genuinely so little respect for anyone else?

This is why we’re going into another lockdown. Not because the government isn’t doing its job but because people are selfish – it’s all about themselves. I urge people to take a reality check and start blaming themselves and try to find a little more respect for those of us who are trying to make things better.

We could start with the white, pinkhaired woman who sat next to me and the young black man standing right in the middle of the entrance of the carriage without a mask on.

■ I feel as if I have been locked down since March! All the things I enjoy doing have never restarted and all holidays were cancelled.

Embroidery classes, craft retreats, theatre visits and social groups – all forgotten about and for someone living on their own, they are a lifeline.

It seems to me there is an idea that all people do is go to pubs and drink themselves silly but I am sure there is a silent majority who actually enjoy doing other things so, when this second lockdown ends, surely some thought must go into making reopening these places a priority.

But alcohol is a money-maker in tax revenue and people’s livelihoods depend on hospitality venues opening so I won’t be expecting much.
