Seb strike another Hammer blow for Blades

-

A RARE Premier League goal for Sebastien Haller gave West Ham victory at Bramall Lane and piled more misery on bottom club Sheffield United.

Chris Wilder’s side have only one point from their nine matches after Haller’s 56th-minute strike from the edge of the area inflicted a fourth straight loss and an eighth in the league.

West Ham went ahead early in the second half. Jarrod Bowen collected the ball on the half-turn following a clearance by Aaron Ramsdale and embarked on a driving run towards goal.

Bowen released Pablo Fornals, whose shot was blocked at point-blank range but the ball ricocheted to Haller, whose first-time shot flew into the roof of the net.

The Ivory Coast striker has scored four goals in cup competitions this season but his effort yesterday was only his second goal in the league this season and fourth in 2020. The hosts had

their chances, with the best coming after 76 minutes. Substitute Rhian Brewster played a delightful ball into the path of Ollie McBurnie but with the goal at his mercy he snatched at the chance and blasted his effort against the bar.

Afterwards, Wilder told the BBC: ‘We have earned the right to be here and have to do some things pretty quickly to stay in it and protect our status as a Premier League club.

‘There’s a long way to go. Without being disrespectful to some of the places this football club has had to go, it is no good taking a backwards step and feeling sorry for yourself.’
