CUOMO BLASTS SYNAGOGUE THAT HELD ‘SECRET’ MASKLESS WEDDING FOR 7,000
A SYNAGOGUE has been criticised for hosting a ‘secret’ wedding attended by 7,000 unmasked guests.
New York governor Andrew Cuomo said it showed ‘a blatant disregard of the law’ after a video emerged showing guests standing shoulder to shoulder in the packed venue.
‘It’s illegal. It was also disrespectful to the people of New York,’ he added.
Calling on New York City mayor Bill de Blasio to conduct ‘a robust investigation’ into the ceremony at the Yetev Lev temple, in Williamsburg, he said: ‘If 7,000 people went to a wedding, you can figure that out, right? That’s the problem. It’s hard to keep a secret.
‘It’s my information the city is investigating. They should, and if 7,000 people were at a wedding, I’m sure they’ll be able to figure it out, and then we’ll bring the full consequences of legal action to bear.’
Organisers went to huge lengths to hide the November 8 wedding of YoelTeitelbaum – grandson of Satmar grand rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum – from ‘the ravenous press and government officials,’ reported Yiddish newspaper Der Blatt.
And Mr Cuomo said the event, held in clear defiance of coronavirus restrictions, had the potential to be a super-spreader event in a city that was at the epicentre of the first wave and is dealing with a resurgence in Covid-19 cases. Meanwhile, millions of Americans are defying health warnings not to travel ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday.
With infections hitting a record 168,000 per day, people are flocking to airports against the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
More than 1million passengers went through airport screenings on Sunday – the highest number since mid-March.
Hospital admissions have also surged nearly 50 per cent in a fortnight in the US, which has recorded 255,000 deaths and 12million cases since the pandemic began.
