Hong Kong activists jailed over protest
THREE Hong Kong pro-democracy activists have been held in custody for spearheading a protest outside police headquarters last year.
Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam admitted charges of organising, taking part in and inciting the unauthorised protest against police brutality last June. The trio, all members of the nowdisbanded Demosisto party, appeared at a Kowloon court and could face five years in jail when they are sentenced next week.
Wong, who became known as a student leader in the 2014 Umbrella Movement pro-democracy protests, is among a band of activists facing charges since China imposed a sweeping national security law, restricting political speech. Before the hearing he said: ‘Neither prison bars, nor election ban, nor any other arbitrary powers would stop us from activism.’
Chow posted: ‘Although I am mentally prepared [for jail], I still feel a little bit scared. I will try my best to face it bravely.’
