WOLVES PROFIT FROM NET GAINS AFTER WALCOTT TURNS BACK THE CLOCK

-

PEDRO NETO’S equaliser denied Southampton the chance to go third in the Premier League as Wolves fought back to earn a point at Molineux last night.

The Portuguese youngster tucked in the rebound after Raul Jimenez’s shot came back off the post on 75 minutes.

Theo Walcott had earlier slotted Saints ahead after the break with his first goal for the club in almost 15 years.

Wolves had to do without captain and defender Conor Coady, who missed a league game for the club for the first time since September 2017 having been in self-isolation.

They tested visiting goalkeeper Alex McCarthy three times in the first half, through Daniel Podence, Nelson Semedo and Leander Dendoncker. Walcott and Stuart Armstrong went closest for the visitors.

Walcott edged Southampton ahead on 58 minutes after Armstrong did well to keep the ball in play on the right of the Wolves area and sent in a low cross for the on-loan Everton forward to slot home.

Walcott missed a good chance to make it 2-0 and Neto punished him with 15 minutes left as he tucked in neatly after Jimenez’s shot had hit the post.

Within three minutes, Jimenez thought he had headed a winner but he was flagged offside from Joao Moutinho’s free-kick.
