Trump does it his way... and bows out to Sinatra

-

FRANK SINATRA’S My Way blared out of speakers as Donald Trump flew off yesterday to start his new life – after vowing he ‘will be back’.

The outgoing US president, now impeached twice, was accompanied by the 1969 tune as he jetted off from Maryland’s Joint Base Andrews to his Florida Mar-a-Lago resort.

He broke with tradition by snubbing Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Hours earlier, the former property mogul, 74, walked out of the White House for the last time as president, accompanied by wife Melania – while vice-president Mike Pence was absent.

Mr Trump showed little emotion as he spoke to the press before boarding Marine One for the military base. ‘It’s been a great honour, the honour of a lifetime,’ he said. ‘I just want to say goodbye but hopefully it’s not a long-term goodbye. We’ll see each other again.’

The couple arrived in Maryland to a 1-gun salute. In a speech, Mr Trump offered warm words to his successor – while not naming him – saying: ‘I wish the new administration great luck and great success – I think they’ll have great success.’

And Mrs Trump told their supporters: ‘Being your first lady was my greatest honour.’

Several of Mr Trump’s children appeared to cry as he told the crowd: ‘Goodbye, we love you, we will be back in some form.’ He left the stage to Village People hit YMCA.

Before leaving office, Mr Trump pledged that the ‘movement we started is just beginning’ – following reports he may try to run again in 0 4.

Despite boycotting Mr Biden’s swearing-in ceremony, he did keep to one tradition – leaving a note behind for his successor.

But officials refused to reveal what it said.
