BUT SELF-HARM WAS A TOUGHER FIGHT
ILLIE EILISH reckons she must have been too ‘superior’ to dabble with drugs alongside her mates when she was younger.
The Therefore I Am singer escaped lasting damage from several teen pitfalls, even the self-harming sparked by ‘my horrible body relationship’.
She said: ‘When I was growing up and I was around my group of friends back then... they would all be drinking and smoking and doing drugs and whatever.’
One of her friends overdosed on drugs but
Billie, 19, was never tempted to succumb to peer pressure. ‘I’m a very strongwilled person, and I think at the time I was very alpha,’ she added.
‘I’m coming to realise that I may have felt a feeling of superiority.’
Now she steers clear of drug-takers in the entertainment t world as she grapples es with life as a global superstar at such a young age. ‘I’m not out here going to parties,’ Billie said. ‘I’m me, so I can’t really go... anywhere.’ A more challenging battle as a youngster was against self-harming. And Billie’s aides were afraid that recent scrutiny over her wearing a crop top would bubble up her past anxieties. ‘The people around me were more worried about it than I was, because the reason I used to cut myself was because of my body,’ the grunge popster told Vanity Fair magazine. ‘To be quite honest with you, I only started wearing baggy clothes because of my body. ‘I was really, really glad though, mainly, that I’m in this place in my life, because if that had happened three years ago, when I was in the midst of my horrible body relationship – or dancing a ton, five years ago, I wasn’t really eating.
‘I was, like, starving myself. I remember taking a pill that told me that it would make me lose weight and it only made me pee the bed – when I was 12.’
