Second arrest for Hong Kong democracy activists

- Anthony H, Sunderland

POLICE have re-arrested 47 prodemocracy activists in Hong Kong under strict new national security laws – a month after releasing them.

The 39 men and eight women charged with conspiracy to commit subversion include many who stood in unofficial elections last year to find candidates for Hong Kong’s assembly.

They hoped to elect enough members to vote down major bills and eventually force leader Carrie Lam to resign.

Authorities said their campaign was part of a plan to paralyse the city’s legislature and subvert state power.

Among those arrested were activist Mike Lam King-nam and former legislator Eddie Chu. They will appear in court today, police said.

The national security law was imposed on the semi-autonomous state by Beijing last year.

ASTON MERRYGOLD and his fiancée have done ‘all the planning’ for their wedding – but not yet set a date.

The JLS singer and dancer Sarah Louise Richardson pushed back their nuptials when she fell pregnant with youngest child Macaulay, aged eight months. The

Masked Singer star said: ‘We’ve never officially bookedd it, so will turn up somewhereere and go, “We’d love a weddingedding in three weeks.”’ Avoiding ding spilling any details, he added: ‘Whatever Sarah wants, ants, it’s going to happen. I justst say, “I’ll be there, let me know whenn and where”.’

I don’t understand why anyone would want to go ‘back to normal’, to how it was before the pandemic. What was normal about more people being reliant on food banks then ever before, benefits being cut, the government not investing in the NHS, the rich getting richer on the backs of the poor, systemic racism, not enough being done about climate change? There were many things not normal in this country before March 2020, and I don’t want to go back to that!
