Hate the owners if you like but leave players out of this

- Mike, South Shields

■ I hope people realise that this proposed football European Super League, involving England’s ‘big six’ clubs, is the brainchild of the owners of these clubs, and that neither the players nor the managers of those clubs have had a part in it (Metro, Tue).

Please do not aim venom at anyone other than the owners. By all means target them but don’t boo the players, as happened to the Liverpool team before they played Leeds on Monday night. All the owners care about is money – there is no love for the game, just greed. They have no thought for the heart, soul and history of our glorious game.

Fiona, London

■ Maybe the European Super League could be a good thing. Perhaps some of the bandwagon-jumpers who support these big teams because of their ‘success’ may start going to watch their local teams instead and bring some much-needed funds to them.

The Plymouth branch of the Manchester United supporters club springs to mind… cue the backlash!

Lisa, Suffolk

■ I’m not much of a football fan but

I say let them form their own league! Let’s face it, our ‘British’ clubs are mainly owned by international millionaires and most of the players in the teams are not even British anyway.

This would allow the UK to scout and train locally and give more young kids a chance at achieving their dreams.

Gail Jones Crossgates, Fife

■ I see the proposed Super League as a case of breaking Uefa’s monopoly over football. Moreover, club owners are in the business for profit, not charity.

The 12 clubs – six from England, three each from Spain and Italy – have spent so much money and need to recover their investments.

Also, these clubs are not leaving the Uefa competitions and their FA leagues. We should wait to get more details from the organisers.

Godwin Johnson-Igeli, Luton

■ With regard to the teams that have signed up to the European League, I say good riddance.

Roger, Walsall

■ I assume that, as there will not be enough time to play 38 Premier League games in addition to the Super League games, the six English teams will be resigning from the Premier League.

Terry, Winnersh

■ While the thought of the top six football clubs breaking away to join a European Super League will kill off the rest of the teams through lack of TV money, the question has to be asked – what do the Premier League footballers of those teams think about the salaries they are earning which are driving the need for these deals?

Maybe if they got £5k per week, football would actually be far more competitive and interesting to watch.

Keith Stafford, via email

■ Why are people getting wound up about this Super League? If those teams don’t want to compete, fine. Let some of the other, less-well-funded teams have a crack at the Champions League and don’t give the teams that leave another thought.

Aidan, Dartford

■ Will the foreign-owned mega football clubs do what tech companies do and pay less tax in clubs’ countries and minuscule amounts abroad?
