He’s won elections but what has Boris actually achieved?

-

■ Chris from Maidstone says people vote for Boris Johnson because he ‘personifies the British spirit’ (MetroTalk, Wed). So does this also include being a liar? Lazy? Someone who makes racist remarks? Makes you proud to be British, doesn’t it?

■ Apart from the successful vaccine, Boris Johnson’s only other achievement was the confirmation of the unnecessary HS2 project.

There is very little chance of this government actually implementing any of the items from Tuesday’s Queen’s Speech (Metro, Wed). Like all governments over the past 20 years, it is completely out of touch with reality.

■ Boris is a vote-winner because he leads from the front and uses direct action to shift the rear end of the lethargic.

■ Thousands have died in the pandemic because many actions by the prime minister were not taken soon enough.

This is the man who, at the start of the pandemic, ignored social distancing and was shaking hands against the advice of experts, not to mention not wearing a mask. Who did not follow his advisers’ pleas before eventually capitulating to the first lockdown and, again, the second one. Who expected the dedicated people caring for highly infectious people to expose themselves to risk without adequate or enough protective clothing, or even medical equipment, until well into the pandemic.

Who was more interested in refurbishment of his flat than protecting his citizens. Who is known to make insulting racist remarks. Who left borders open for about a year after sensible leaders had closed theirs and were checking temperatures on arrival.

Who doesn’t answer legitimate questions during prime minister’s questions but detours to say how ‘proud’ he is of his achievements. Who is a stranger to the truth.

Who takes credit for the hard work of the NHS staff, AstraZeneca and Oxford University, and anyone else who has done something good. And who lays the blame for his multiple failures on anyone except himself.

Let’s rather look at Sir Keir Starmer, who has taken Johnson to account on his failings expertly, doesn’t lose his temper in parliament and respects the public by dressing like a leader, combing his hair and behaving like a grown-up with dignity.

Ray, Sutton

■ There isn’t a single UK politician who has done the right thing during this Covid crisis. We are an island nation and all the measures taken to prevent the spread of Covid could have been reduced massively by doing one simple thing – completely banning travel to and from the UK.

Instead, we were given mixed and often contradictory information that led to holidaymakers being stranded or heading for the last planes out of foreign countries at super-short notice.

As far as I’m concerned, every single acting politician unnecessarily endangered the lives of people in the UK.

The government ought to have focused on people staying in the UK and supporting our own economy – this would have been far more beneficial than allowing people to go abroad.
