Boris is like Blair, he is not bound by party orthodoxies

-

■ Further to the debate about the appeal of Boris Johnson (MetroTalk, Thu) – in case no one has noticed it, Boris has taken a leaf out of the Tony Blair book of ‘how to be popular with everyone’.

New Labour was popular because it encompassed Conservative policies such as privatisation and university tuition fees. It carried out policies that Tory governments hadn’t dared to implement.

Now Boris is doing the same in reverse. It has even been remarked by Labour peers that the Conservatives have ‘hijacked’ Labour policies. So no wonder they are taking over traditional Labour constituencies.

Sir Keir Starmer should note that he really hasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell to improve Labour’s popularity while the loony left still dominates the party.

Andrea, London

■ Boris Johnson is like a struggling football team at the bottom of the table that hasn’t won all season. Then, on the last day of the season, he finally wins a game and expects the fans to forgive and forget just how bad the season has actually been.

Paul, London

■ In praising the prime minister for his ‘British spirit of aspiration, resilience and optimism’, Chris (MetroTalk, Wed) has ‘fallen into the same trap’, as he puts it, of many who close their eyes to Johnson’s deceitfulness and total lack of positivity for the United Kingdom.

Chris, like many, chooses to believe the false promises Johnson makes while ignoring his failure to deliver. The Torysupporting elite are happy to put up with deceit, untruthfulness, a lack of integrity, transparency and honesty, and a failure to value the hard-working, honest people of the UK. .

The UK is in mortal danger, due to Johnson’s lies on Brexit and the Irish border. Our government is mired in corruption, lies in parliament on transparency, nurses’ bursaries, number of nurses, police officers and more.

Where was the delivery in the Queen’s Speech on promises Johnson made on social care? Did he lie?

Chris and those like him must take off their blinkers – see the facts and the lies. Or is Chris happy to accept a liar as PM?

Richard Mansfield, Notts

■ I am puzzled at what Chris means by ‘what [Boris] Johnson offers is his Tory brand of socialism’.

Socialism would be a worldwide moneyless system without leaders. It would be a world where goods and services are produced for need only.

There has never been a socialist country despite what is said. The Tories, Labour etc are opposed to socialism.

■ Further to reports of the county court judgement against Boris (Metro, Thu) – the witch hunt goes on!

Sheila, Glasgow

■ Tired of the sniping against Boris. He’s done amazing against extreme odds. Others think they could have done better – the benefit of hindsight.

Sue, via email

■ In light of details of the county court judgement becoming clearer, does this mean we can no longer expect an episode of the bailiff documentary series Can’t Pay? We’ll Take It Away! being filmed from the steps of 10 Downing Street, with a variety of very un-John Lewislooking furnishings being carried out of the front door?
