Environmen­t secretary George Eustice, along with other MPs, says the government cannot afford to give NHS staff in England more than a one per cent pay rise (Metro, Thu). This is farcical. We don’t see MPs offering to hand back the inflation-busting increases given them by an independen­t pay review. Furthermor­e, there seems to be a vast willingnes­s to hand millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to organisati­ons such as Greensill.

nMr Eustice was questioned after Dua Lupa (right) used her Brit Awards acceptance speech to call for a bigger pay rise for nurses. I think we agree with the overarchin­g sentiment but Eustice is correct. Opening the floodgates would cripple us further and all sections would demand rises as ‘heroes’. And it’s a bit rich coming from Lupa, who after urging people to stay home, travelled abroad

While doctors and nurses deserve more, giving more NHS pay will not solve the staff crisis while the private sector and agencies exist. Any NHS rises will increase private sector profits. Ted, Reading
