UNITE ELECTS ITS FIRST WOMAN LEADER

-

BRITAIN’S most powerful trade union is to have its first female leader.

Sharon Graham (pictured) won the election to be the next general secretary of Unite, receiving almost 5,000 more votes than her nearest rival, fellow left-winger Steve Turner. Centrist Gerard Coyne – who was backed by the Labour leadership – was third.

Ms Graham will take over from Len McCluskey. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer tweeted that he was ‘looking forward to working together’.
