Interpreter’s plea for help after dad shot

-

A VETERAN used his Army contacts to help an Afghan interpreter’s family flee to the UK after hearing the man’s father had been killed by the Taliban.

Ian Wornham was called by Naj Baghlani (pictured top), who he worked with at the 2007 Battle of Musa Qala that forced the militants to retreat in Helmand province.

The interpreter, now living in Belgium, said members of the now-triumphant group had stormed his family home in Afghanistan. They had shot his dad, forcing the others to flee for their lives.

Via contacts in the Parachute Regiment, former sergeant Mr Wornham (pictured bottom) was able to reach troops on the ground who hid seven family members at a hotel and secured places for them on a UK flight.

Last night they were safe and expected imminently. Mr Wornham, from Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire, told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: ‘What manner of men would we be if we left our colleagues behind?’ Mr Baghlani said his work with ‘foreign forces’ was the reason given by the Taliban for his dad’s killing but added: ‘If I had an opportunity to complete such a mission I’d do it again.’
