Nuno plays down Spurs being early pacesetters

- By GAVIN BROWN

TOTTENHAM manager Nuno Espirito Santo insists his side’s position at the top of the fledgling Premier League table ‘doesn’t mean anything’.

Nuno became the first Spurs boss since Arthur Rowe in 1949 to win his first three games in charge after Heung-min Son’s free-kick gave them a 1-0 victory over Watford on Saturday.

All three victories have been by that scoreline and after a summer dominated by a lengthy search for a manager and Harry Kane’s desire to leave, there is early optimism Spurs could at least challenge for a top-four finish.

But Nuno said of the early league table: ‘That doesn’t mean anything at all, that doesn’t mean anything.

‘I invite everybody, not only the players but our fans, to not pay attention to that. Don’t pay attention to that. Let’s keep on working, we still have a long way and a lot of aspects to

improve on.’ Spurs have never previously started a season with three clean sheets so it is real progress for a side whose defence often looked flimsy last term.

Kane made his first league start of the season having failed to secure a move from his boyhood club over the summer and Nuno is confident things are starting to take shape.

‘That’s the beginning of everything,’ he added. ‘Always the shape and organisation, being solid and compact because we have talent. Being consist

ent is what we are focused on and we have to keep on going.

‘Watford was clearly trying to make us go higher on our lines to play on our backs. The back four controlled very well. But at the same time, the second balls, we need to be anticipating that part of our game. It’s something we have to improve.’

While many Spurs players are now away on international duty, Nuno said: ‘We’ll work with the players who are going to stay and try to make things better for the next one.’
