A BETTER GETAWAY

We’re finally able to jet off for a much needed getaway, but if you’re concerned about the impact of travel on the environment, you’re not alone. easyJet is on a journey to make flying more sustainable. Here’s how…

-

When it comes to operating sustainably, easyJet is ahead of the curve. In 2019, easyJet became the first major airline to announce trailblazing plans to offset all the carbon emissions from the fuel used on every single one of its flights.

Not only is it still the only major European airline to be doing this, it also does so at no extra cost to passengers. Nor do customers need to opt in to the carbon-offsetting scheme, as easyJet does this on their behalf.

easyJet holidays is also the first major UK tour operator to offset carbon emissions associated with holidays, offsetting the fuel from the flight, the energy used in hotels and the fuel from (in-destination) transfers, so you can be safe in the knowledge your holiday is a more sustainable choice.

HOW IT WORKS

Simply put, for every ton of carbon emitted from the fuel used on its flights, easyJet buys the equivalent in carbon credits, which are produced by a range of Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard schemes.

These include projects around renewable energy and programmes that protect against deforestation.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

easyJet’s ultimate goal is to reach net-zero emissions flying across Europe by 2050. Until then, the carrier believes carbon offsetting is the best interim solution for the travel industry, in addition to flying as efficiently as possible, with a modern, fuel-efficient fleet, right now.

Looking ahead, easyJet is working with its partners Airbus and Wright Electric to accelerate the development of zero-emission aircraft, powered by hydrogen-propulsion and hydrogen-electric technologies.

As easyJet’s CEO, Johan Lundgren, says: ‘If people choose to fly, we want to be one of the best choices they can make.’
