IT’S SO RARE FOR ME TO McFLY AWAY ADMITS TOM

-

TOM FLETCHER admits he and his wife Giovanna talked about how to avoid the Strictly Curse before he even hit the BBC’s dance floor.

However, novelist Giovanna, 36 – who won I’m A Celebrity last year – wasn’t worried that the McFly frontman would get too close to stunning dancer Amy Dowden.

She was more concerned about how they would cope with spending so much time apart.

Talking about the dreaded curse, I’ll Be OK singer Tom told Guilty Pleasures: ‘Yeah, well we did [talk about it] but I think it’s more of the commitment.

‘We’re very lucky because both me and my wife are authors and we’re home all the time. “You’re going to be away every day, out of the house”, that was more of the discussion.’

Amy, 31, recently postponed her wedding to fiancé Ben Jones because of Covid restrictions and now

Tom, 36, has explained how he copes with being pressed up against her all day in spandex. ‘Everyone is so all over each other on Strictly, it does seem quite a weird physical close thing that you wouldn’t get in any other job,’ he admitted. ‘But my wife and I met at theatre school when we were kids so we’ve been in this world for a long time. I think it might be stranger if you were coming from a different kind of industry, but we literally have both grown up in theatres and around actors and dancers so it wasn’t unusual for us.’

His other main headache is the pressure to win after his bandmate Harry Judd scooped the Glitterball trophy a decade ago. ‘A little bit of internal band pressure there from Harry Judd, but he’s nothing but supportive,’ said Tom, whose latest children’s book is called The Christmasaurus And The Naughty List.

‘I learned how to cope with the Strictly experience through him. I knew how hard I’d have to work because Harry worked incredibly hard ten years ago, so that was really useful. I knew not to take this responsibility lightly.’
