Even sceptics must realise the dangers

-

■ I’d like to thank John (MetroTalk, Tue) for the good laugh. He wrote in to say people are ‘demonising intelligent and responsible adults’ who have chosen not to be vaccinated and to ‘leave us alone – we aren’t doing you any harm’. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of scepticism but refusing to get vaccinated while the country is still in the grip of a pandemic that has now claimed almost 145,000 lives in the UK alone is selfish, arrogant and indefensible. You are putting everyone you come into contact with at risk.

If you have any concerns, you can ring your GP or speak to literally any medical expert in the country.

Elliott, Banstead

■ Has John not read the many desperate reports written by intensive care doctors and nurses who are suffering from exhaustion caused by trying to save the lives of the unvaccinated? Our intensive care units are full with otherwise healthy people who have chosen not to be vaccinated. They shouldn’t be there and wouldn’t be there had they made the unselfish choice to be vaccinated.

I believe I have a responsibility to my fellow beings. Mr Lawrence obviously does not.

John Lewis, Coulsdon

■ The people in the UK and in Europe who have made a choice not to get vaccinated need to acknowledge that they are at a higher risk of either getting or transmitting Covid.

They therefore need to minimise their risk of spreading the infection, by maintaining a safe social distance, wearing masks and getting tested regularly. All of those mitigating measures will help.

Alan, London

■ Paul Bell (MetroTalk, Tue) suggests rising case numbers means Covid passports are now needed for larger venues. But considering the doublejabbed can still catch and pass on the virus, they are a waste of time and just end up hurting the hospitality industry even more.

Clive, Southampton

■ Of the 40,000 or so daily Covid cases, very many will have no financial support or benefit from sick pay for the ten days they are forced to miss work and isolate. Not everybody has the security of a salary like employees of big companies (and MPs, for that matter!), as they’re either selfemployed or on zero-hours contracts. Not providing this basic financial support is a fundamental failing of this government and a recipe for civil unrest such as we are currently witnessing in the EU!

Carlos, Lancashire

■ David (MetroTalk, Wed) says he’s not had a cold since masks became the norm. Since wearing them, I’ve had Covid and three chest infections. Most people don’t wear them properly anyway.
