PORTO DOWNED AS THIAGO AND SALAH STRIKE

- By NICK METCALFE

THIAGO ALCANTARA struck a magnificent goal to send Liverpool on their way to a 2-0 victory over Porto, as the Reds kept up their perfect Champions League record this season.

Liverpool are an amazing ten points clear of Porto in Group B, with one game left, as Jurgen Klopp’s team chase a seventh European Cup.

Despite already being through to the last 16 as group winners, Klopp fielded a number of his biggest stars for this match at Anfield, including Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, while teenager Tyler Morton was given his first taste of the competition. Porto should have gone in front early on, when Luis Diaz burst free, drew goalkeeper Alisson out of his goal and teed up Otavio, who screwed a golden chance wide.

The hosts thought they had gone ahead after 37 minutes, when Thiago set up Mane, who finished low into the bottom corner. The goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.

Liverpool then showed their superior class after the break. First, a free-kick from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was headed away to Thiago who showed fabulous technique to fire low into the net from 25 yards.

Twenty minutes from time, the three points were safe. A fine long ball from Morton found Salah. He backheeled to Jordan Henderson, who set up Salah to fire into the net with typical aplomb.
