the music, and all the architecture and the style of the home, and I thought, why not bring it outside to and create this cool atmosphere?’

But it isn’t just her garden that’s inspired by this Gothic aesthetic – the interiors of her house follow a similar pattern.

‘I wanted to paint every room in my house black. My whole house is very Gothic, dark and moody, and the whole goal is for it to feel like a haunted castle, even though I live in a one-storey bungalow,’ she says.

Chloe finds channelling this aesthetic through her gardening therapeutic and she is now inspiring others, with her TikTok account @itschloehurst attracting more than 89,000 followers.

‘Gardening is literally grounding yourself in the dirt,’ she says. ‘It’s just a moment for me to completely detach from the digital world, and just relax. It’s a labour of love – you come out of a gardening session covered in mud and scratches from the rose bush, but it’s fulfilling, and it feels so good to connect with nature.’

For Chloe, the allure of dark plants lies in the fact that they’re rare and ‘mysterious’. ‘Dark plants are very mystifying, and you just don’t see them very often,’ she says. ‘People ask me all the time, “Is this a filter?”

‘And I think that’s what’s so intriguing about that colour, because as much as I love a colourful garden, there’s something about it that’s super-poisonous and mysterious.’

Though some of her fans assume she has a huge garden, Chloe is restricted on space and focuses on a few ‘stars of the show’ – with her favourite elements including the black mondo and the

Arabian Night dahlia.

Though Chloe doesn’t plan on staying in her current home for ever, she still has plans for her beloved goth garden.

‘The goal is to own a Victorian home with a large garden, but that’s not going to be happening any time soon,’ she says.

‘What I’m doing right now is just working on the actual structure of my garden. We’re getting a new fence this year because it’s falling down, and I’m building a rock border around it.’

So, what would Chloe advise others who want to start their own goth garden? First, you’ll need to possess a little bit of patience, she says. ‘When people first get into gardening, it’s very exciting and people want it to all happen at once, but really just enjoy the process,’ she says.

‘Part of the fun is hand-selecting pieces for your garden. If you get it all at once it could be overwhelming. Enjoy the process – it might be long, it might be short, but just enjoy it.

‘Definitely look up your zone, too. Zone sun requirements, so the watering and what works well in your area, understand what perennials and annuals are in your area. Do your research and enjoy the process.’
