HURST COMMUNITY CHARITY AGM: The first AGM since the beginning of the Covid19 restrictions was held on Saturday 29 January, in the church. The Chairman, Tim Leech, reported that the Charity Shop is now open again 6 days a week between 9 am and 1 pm and is doing well. The closure during the pandemic had made a substantial difference to the income available to be distributed but the Trustees were confident that this year’s income would recover. Two matters were highlighted by the Chairman and Treasurer, that more volunteers would be welcomed to add to the very willing team of helpers, and that applications for funds would be welcomed. The charity supports local groups and organisations for the purchase of equipment, improvement of their facilities, and from individuals for specific projects. In the financial year just ended, grants have been made to The Allotments Association, Hurst Festival, Hurst Players, the Toddler Group, the Monday Group and many others of all shapes and sizes. If you are interested in volunteering, or in applying for a grant, please visit the shop for an application form. The shop is located to the rear of the Village Garden (sometimes referred to as the Village Green, though that is actually where the war memorial is), near the entrance to the car park. If you are new to the village and haven’t visited it, do go and have a browse. There are amazing bargains to be had.

VILLAGE VOICE: the excellent monthly magazine, needs volunteers to deliver it around the villages. Contact info@villagemagazines.co.uk or 01273 846978.

HURSTPIERPOINT PLAYERS: were very disappointed to have to cancel their production of A Christmas Carol, because of Covid, and are now delighted to announce 5 performances of Alan Ayckbourn’s comedy ‘How the other half loves’, from Tuesday 29 March to Saturday 2 April at 7.30 pm, directed by Richard Coney. Tickets in due course from www.hurstplayers.org.uk.

HEBER OPERA: is holding two open rehearsals in the Village Centre at 7.30 pm on Sunday 6 and Sunday 13 March.

They hope to inspire ‘all you singers’ to come and enjoy an evening of singing and find out about what it takes to put on one of their operas. For more details contact Michael Withers on michael@ michaelwithers.co.uk or ring 07802 735190. Heber always sings in English.

HURST MONTHLY SOCIAL

GROUP: meet at the Guide

HQ, entrance in the corner of Trinity Road car park on the first Wednesday of each month. March 2 talk by Ann Winney, of Hurst Hedgehog Haven. Please take a lateral flow test before you attend. For more information contact Ann on 01273 649023 or Diana on 01273 835284.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS: Full Council Meetings in the Village Centre on 24 February; Estates & Facilities on 10 February. As you know, all meetings are open to the public.

HURST VILLAGE CINEMA: The showing of the live relay of the National Theatre production of Leopoldstadt, Tom Stoppard’s spellbinding, but harrowing, account of the holocaust, focussing on a Jewish family in Vienna, was shown on Holocaust Memorial Day. Thanks to the Village Cinema group for reminding us that we must never forget the horrors of the Second World War. Upcoming film showings are: 10 February, ‘Red Turtle’ - an animation and a beautiful and engrossing fable. 25 February, ‘For Sama’, a documentary about the horrors of war torn Aleppo which Mike says is uncomfortable viewing, especially when amplified by watching from the privileged safety of West Sussex. But as the curtain came up on this film, he says he was not left with the feeling of how low humanity can be, and there is plenty of that, but rather a feeling of how amazing humans can be. Sunday 27 February, 3 pm, Knives Out (12A); Hugely entertaining modern take on the murder mystery whodunnit with the obligatory stellar cast led by Daniel Craig as the laconic Southern private detective

Benoit Blanc.

We are delighted to welcome musician Simon Anckorn again for the first of our 2022 evenings. His popularity is legendary, so we’ll be in the main church rather than the Gallery, as there is much more space. Ticket bookings are already high with more than two weeks to go. Simon Anckorn brings with him the amazing vocal talents of Sarah Rolph and sax player Phil Paton. With the church’s new flexible seating, people can feel safe and socially distanced. Seats are still just £5 and there is a licenced bar. Doors open at 5.30 pm. If you can let me know that you are coming, that will be very helpful, so that we can ensure that the right amount of seating is set out. Email or phone: margaret@112a.co.uk. 01273 835113. But if you decide to come at the last minute, we’ll find space for you.
