Giving students a fair chance with exams

- MP for Mid Sussex

I’ve seen a local petition has been started regarding the installation of a much-needed pedestrian crossing to access the supermarket in Leylands Road and get more safely around this part of Burgess Hill for walking to school or the train station nearby too. Following my catch-up meeting last Friday with WSCC Highways and cabinet member Joy Dennis, I am very pleased to advise the design phase of this crossing has been completed.

It has been requested for some time and is in the programme, as councillor Barrett-Miles has been progressing this need at the county council. I understand a review of the commencement will be undertaken in March, which will set a start date for delivery which I will push for as soon as possible.

The Fairbridge roundabout works, which run to mid-May, have started. Please allow an extra time for your journey or use an alternative route. I worked with local councillors, Fairbridge Developments and WSCC Highways to ensure there is still northbound access to Cuckfield Road, so we can continue to access and support the local businesses there.

Students across Mid Sussex have faced huge challenges to their education during the pandemic, and the government’s priority is to provide all support necessary and ensure fairness when they sit their exams this summer. This is why we’ve announced

GCSE and A-level students will be given more information about topics in their exams, formula sheets in maths, physics, and combined sciences, and a more spread out exam timetable.

This will give students a fair chance to demonstrate what they have learnt, considering the impact of the ongoing pandemic over the past two years.

Constituents have been writing in regarding the ongoing situation on the border between Russia and Ukraine. I am pleased we have continued to show our support for Ukraine and its sovereignty. We have now pledged an additional £88million to build Ukraine’s defences and reduce reliance on Russian energy supplies, while strengthening our package of tough sanctions to be enacted if a further Russian incursion occurs.
