Ireland debut a success for Walsh
Megan Walsh was praised by her manager after making her international debut.
The Albion keeper won her first Republic of Ireland cap in a 1-0 defeat against Russia in the Pinatar Cup in La Manga, Spain, on Saturday.
Walsh produced a string of fine saves and Ireland manager Vera Pauw believes she has a bright future at international level.
“We are very happy Megan joined Ireland,” said Pauw of the 27-year-old who qualifies for Ireland through her grandfather, who was born in Wexford. “She played well and has a huge future in front of her.”
Albion teammate Megan Connolly was rested on Saturday after playing in last week’s 2-1 win over Poland but is likely to return to the team on Tuesday when Ireland play Wales in a thirdplace play-off.
Kayleigh Green, fresh from helping Albion beat Reading with two goals in their WSL meeting last Sunday, created a goal and won a penalty in Wales’ 3-1 win over Scotland but the Welsh lost on penalties to Belgium after a goalless draw on Saturday, when Green scored their only spotkick in a 3-1 shoot-out defeat.
Meanwhile, Albion’s Kayleigh Green has been nominated for February’s Goal of the Month in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
The Welsh international’s second of the match against Reading – a tidy finish past the keeper after a slick build-up – came in a 4-1 home win earlier this month.
The other nominations are: Stina Blackstenius – Arsenal v Manchester United; Kyah Simon – Spurs v Albion; Ashleigh Neville – Spurs v Albion; Emily Gielnik – Aston Villa v Everton.
