Piltdown pair celebrate holes in one

-

The year got off to an excellent start for 87-year-old Piltdown GC golfer Geoffrey Longfield when he scored a hole in one on the par three 18th hole.

“This is my third hole in one,” said a delighted Longfield. “The first was in about 1995 and the second on New Year’s Day in 2016. I used my hybrid club and struck the ball well.

“Sadly, my poor eyesight prevented me from seeing the ball roll into the hole and I had to seek assurance from my partner, Richard Pursey, that it had gone in.”

Shortly afterwards Martin Rogers scored his own hole in one in the men’s Stableford.

Rogers said: “I’d had a very mediocre first nine and was pleased finally to make a sweet strike with my seven iron on the 10th.

“A following wind helped the ball to run up the green to the flag at the back and I watched the ball drop into the hole. We celebrated in the bar afterwards!”

The first round of the men’s Winter Pro League was blighted by poor weather, which improved in time for the second and third rounds played in cold, crisp conditions. Matches have been hard fought and Investment, Insurance and Pensions team top the leaderboard with 12.5 points.

Elsewhere, the mixed Texas

Scramble was won by Guy and Hilary Humphry-Baker with David and Jill Munro with a gross 48. Jill featured again in the Ladies’ Stableford beating Julie Scala’s 43 points by one.

The junior nine-hole Stablefords were won by Oscar Tollit and Edward Heagerty. Roger Perrin took the men’s blue tee Stableford and Peter Holley won the Police Stableford with 42. Tricia Blewitt won the ladies’ Four Clubs and a Putter.
