Tragic house fire not suspicious, say police

Sussex Police have said that no suspicious circumstan­ces were uncovered during their investigat­ion into a Burgess Hill house fire where two elderly people were found dead.

Police said that forensic officers, working alongside the fire service, conducted a thorough investigat­ion into the fire in Theobalds Road on Sunday (February 20) .

“The case is now in the hands of the Coroner’s Office and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service,” said a police spokespers­on.

On February 20 Sussex Police confirmed that emergency services had responded to a house fire shortly after midnight, adding that police attended to support the fire service.

“Two people – a man and a woman in their 70s – were sadly found dead at the scene,” they said. “Their next of kin have been informed.

Police added that the coroner’s office had been notified and that work was underway to establish the circumstan­ces of the fire.
