‘Disappointment’ over CQC rating

Forest View care home in Burgess Hill has described its latest inspection report as ‘disappointing’ after being rated as ‘Requires Improvement’.

The Shaw Healthcare home, in Southway, which specialises in nursing and dementia care, had an unannounced inspection by the Care Quality Commission in February. It was part of the CQC’s work to review care homes with outbreaks of Covid-19 and ensure their Infection Prevention and Control practice is safe,

The report, which has just been published, found it was ‘Good’ for being Safe, Effective and Caring, but when asking whether it was Responsive and Well-led, inspectors found it needed improvements.

It found many examples of good practice, with staff following government guidance on Covid, and doing all they could to promote social distancing. Staffing pressures during a Covid outbreak were managed effectively.

The report said: “The home was clean and hygienic and there were cleaning schedules in place for people’s rooms and communal spaces.

“We observed cleaning taking place during the inspection in line with best practice guidance. ‘High touch’ areas were regularly cleaned, and cleaning records reviewed daily to ensure schedules had been met and any concerns could be addressed.”

The inspectors found ‘robust laundry systems in place’ to deal with contaminated laundry and reduce risk of infection.

Martin Vanhinsbergh, Regional Operational Director for Forest View commented: “We were hoping to be rated “Good” which is disappointing, and I am very confident that this will be the outcome of the next inspection.

“The report’s findings were extremely positive, and I would encourage people to read the report as the comments reflected this and it also indicates the improvements that have been made at the home.

“Previously there were four “Requires Improvements” and an “Inadequate”, which has now improved to two “Requires Improvements” and three “Good’ ratings which we are especially pleased about. The home has also had an Infection Prevention Control inspection in February by CQC and everything was reported as satisfactory with no concerns. We’ve been working extremely hard, and we know that residents appreciate that and are happy which is paramount. We will endeavour to improve and get better.”
