Thank you for supporting Ukraine
Igreatly welcome Monday’s announcement about constituents being able to step forward t0 help house Ukrainian refugees, with many constituents offering their homes, workspaces and community spaces, so I wanted to say a big thank you and your generosity has been truly recognised. Councils will be central in helping families settle and access public services, including schools, public health, trauma counselling and other support. Please visit my website to find out more: www.mimsdavies.org. uk/news/homes-ukraine-sponsorshipscheme-launches . This is on top of existing great work I am proud to be part of at DWP, including the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme, and
I’ll be keenly working with the new Minister for Refugees.
It was fantastic to celebrate another International Women’s Day last week. What a privilege to stand with my female MP colleagues on the steps of Westminster Hall and represent all women. This year we showed our support and solidarity for our fellow female parliamentarians in Ukraine and those across the world. Beyond this, we are announcing a new £20million business partnership working with UNICEF and the private sector to support projects that improve access to education for girls – including new skills training, improving teaching and redesigning training – all with a focus on science, technology, maths and engineering.
March is both Ovarian and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and I really want to encourage everyone to get a check. Nearly two-thirds of women in England are diagnosed once cancer has already spread and we need to change this. If you think you may have a symptom, do not hesitate, contact your GP. Prostate cancer comes with fewer symptoms and fewer conversations between men and their GP, so please use the prostate cancer checker – it takes under 30 seconds – https:// prostatecanceruk.org/risk-checker. html
We’ve seen major strides in the muchwanted Online Safety Bill and I was pleased with the recently announced further improvements particularly around tackling cyberflashing. I often worry about the safety of the internet for my youngest and have concerns for my older constituents who have been subjected to fraudulent activity. The new amendments mean social media platforms have the responsibility to prevent fraudulent adverts appearing on their services. Crimes like romance and investment fraud leave lifelong scars on their victims and can completely devastate finances – and these crimes are on the rise with people spending more time online. So please keep safe, if it’s too good to be true, it just may be, so think carefully before committing to any online financial transactions.
This week is English Tourism Week, we are in a beautiful part of England, so please show your love for our area.
