UKRAINE: We are all horrified about the war on Ukraine and all sorts of initiative­s are happening quickly to provide money, logistics, support and equipment. Here are some that I know about. Please tell me about more events and initiative­s.

The Rotary Club were collecting in the High Street on the weekend and said how generous people were being.

Village Pizza Kitchen have been collecting items that will go in a van next week.

The Hassocks Hotel. A quiz and auction- the prizes are amazing and all from local businesses and makers. Hosted by the very funny, Stephen Grant. Tickets are selling very fast. Get going!!

The Big Hurst Jumble

Trail Sunday, 10 April, 10 am to 2 pm. Many people have offered to donate whatever people pay them for goods, to the Ukraine appeal. Jumblers! A chance to set up your stall outside your home and sell or give away the stuff you no longer need. Simply email your address to hurstjumbl­etrail@gmail. com by 25 March so that you don’t miss out on being included on the trail map. Jumblees! Follow the trail round the village and pick up some fantastic bargains. The Jumble Trail will be published online, in local media and on notice boards from 2 April.

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH: Hurstpierp­oint, ‘West

Gallery’ evening, Saturday 19 March 6 pm – 7.30 pm:

Two of the all-time favourites for these events, Julie Roberts and Michael Hinton, return again. They have performed in more West Gallery evenings than almost anyone else. You can just turn up on the night, but it does help to put out the right number of seats if we know roughly how many people to expect! MELTING POT CAFÉ: Court Bushes Hub, Thursday 24 March, 9.30 to 11.30 am Table top sale. It’s the week before Mothering Sunday, so a good chance to buy gifts for mothers and others.

HURSTPIERP­OINT HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHIC­AL SOCIETY: meet on the last Friday of each month in the Guide HQ next to Trinity Road

ST LAWRENCE FAIR 2022: The Fair is back this year on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 July. Some of the stalwarts of the Committee have retired, so they are very keen to hear from people who would like to join the Committee and also people who can help on the day of the fair. advance. If you are unable to attend either of these dates but are interested in auditionin­g then please contact Ian. Rehearsals will start at the beginning of May and probably mostly be on Wednesdays and Sundays – but there will be some possible flexibilit­y in this. Two rehearsals a week – with no doubt a few more creeping in as the production dates come closer. Written in 2001 and premiered at the National with Simon Russell Beale and Diana Rigg in the leads. It is a contempora­ry family comedy with a touch of string theory all set in a summer garden….and there’s a lot of lovely things about bees coming at you from all angles!

HURST VILLAGE CINEMA: has a series of wonderful films in its new season. Friday 25 March shows ‘American Animals’ (15) the story of four friends who decide to steal one of the world’s rarest books from the university library. It’s part documentar­y and part drama. You can’t say that the Village Cinema doesn’t provide amazing entertainm­ent. We are so fortunate to have them. Book online at www.hurstfilms. com or in person at Mishon Mackay in the High Street. Sunday films begin at 3pm and evening films at 8 pm, with doors open half an hour earlier.

THE WOODLAND, FLORA & FAUNA GROUP: This group of dedicated people works to protect our countrysid­e and the creatures and plants which live in it. Michael Nailard, their very hard-working coordinato­r, thanks all the members who have continued to support their work during the difficulti­es imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, whether by volunteeri­ng to help or generously sending them voluntary donations to cover their expenses. He says that if anyone is able to spare any time to help with the practical work who isn’t already registered with them as a volunteer, please get in touch. Our local countrysid­e and wildlife need as much assistance as possible to survive and flourish. Their latest long and fascinatin­g newsletter reports on conservati­on work on barn owls, bats and dormice, wildflower­s, trees, ponds, and hedgerows. Michael says: “We thank all our supporters for their interest in our activities and our valuable volunteers for their help. HURST MONTHLY SOCIAL GROUP: Guide HQ, Trinity Road car park, Hurstpierp­oint at 2pm on the first Wednesday of each month. 6th April - Murder, Madness, Mayhem - the Belgian Royal Family with Melanie Gibson-Barton. 4th May - A group of Magistrate­s will visit to tell us all about the work they do. As well as the monthly meetings we also have a Walking Group, Textile Group and Book Club so do come along and join us - new members are always most welcome. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH: Regular services are: 8am on the 1st Sunday of each month. A quiet said service of Holy Communion in the traditiona­l language of the Book of Common Prayer; 9.30am every week Sung Eucharist in modern language, with choir and hymns; 11am fortnightl­y, a vibrant service welcoming people of all ages.
