Wasn’t given too much of a chance with both goals which were fired low and hard into the bottom corner. May be disappointed with the free-kick as it was struck his side of the goal. Made a great save from a Shane Long effort on the edge of the box, diving full stretch and managing to hold onto the ball.

Joel Veltman- 7

Defended well throughout. Made a great sliding challenge on Shane Long just as the striker was about to pull the trigger inside the area, was given offside but replays showed he wasn’t, so was a vital tackle to prevent a goal.

Lewis Dunk- 7

The Brighton captain was a commanding presence at the back for the Seagulls, and could do nothing to prevent both goals his side conceded. Was especially impressive aerially, heading away numerous long balls and crosses.

Adam Webster- 5

An otherwise solid game ruined by a really poor pass out from defence, which led directly to Southampton’s equaliser. Brought off after an hour.

Leandro Trossard- 7

Was a driving force for Brighton’s attack. Found space well down the left hand side for Brighton’s second, sliding the ball through the defence, which, in an effort to prevent it from reaching Welbeck, Salisu turned into his own net.

Marc Cucurella- 6

A mixed game for the left back. Flew forwards and put the cross in which caused mayhem in the Southampton defence, eventually resulting in the Brighton opener. Gave away a couple of dangerous free kicks on the edge of the area, one of which resulted in Ward-Prowse inevitably firing into the bottom corner. Performed well when moved to centre back

Enock Mwepu- 5

Not the midfielder’s finest game. Was unable to wrestle control of the game in the middle of the park and was brought off after an hour.

Moises Caicedo- 7

Battled well in midfield, throwing himself into challenges, and showed good composure when on the ball. Quick feet helped him when pressed by Southampton and overall had a good game.

Alexis Mac Allister- 6

Was energetic throughout, helping out the Brighton defence. Best moment came when he lifted a nice ball over the defence to Welbeck, creating a good chance, but the striker couldn’t find Maupay with his cross.

Danny Welbeck- 9

Brighton’s best player. A poacher’s goal inside two minutes gave Brighton the lead, stretching onto a loose ball in the area to poke home. Created the Brighton second, driving down the right hand side before dropping inside and hitting a perfect cross-field pass with the outside of his boot to Trossard, who, in trying to find Welbeck resulted in Salisu turning the ball into his own net.

Neal Maupay- 7

Worked hard and pressed well from the front. Stole the ball high up from Romeu and setting Brighton away down the left, leading to a close range Mwepu opportunity which was saved.

Pascal Gross- 7

Thought he’d given Brighton a winner, firing the ball into the bottom left corner only for a VAR check to rule him offside, which looked a harsh decision.

Solly March- 7

Was positive on the ball and looked a threat having come on. Took on players down the right hand side and delivered in a few dangerous looking crosses.

Jeremy Sarmiento- 6

Was really unable to affect the game in the little time he had on the pitch, having come on in the 85th minute.
