13-year-old cellist set to dazzle
13-year-old Aglaïa CarvalhoDubost is to perform the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto with the Burgess Hill Symphony Orchestra at a concert taking place at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 14 at St Andrew’s Church, Junction Road, Burgess Hill. Spokesman Chris Spink said: “She is the latest in a line of talented cellists in her family.
“Her grandfather Santiago Sabino Carvalho plays the cello with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and her parents Sarah CarvalhoDubost and Pavlos Carvalho are both professional cellists as well.
“Pavlos performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Burgess Hill Symphony Orchestra in 2019 and is a regular performer in the area.
“He is also artistic director of Ensemble Reza.
“Aglaïa began playing the cello at just three years old and was taught by her parents.
“She has been winning cups and prizes in the Mid Sussex Competitive music festival from the age of just four.
“She achieved her grade eight at the age of nine and recently earned a Trinity Diploma at the age of thirteen.
“In 2016, at seven years old, Aglaïa received a scholarship for the National Children’s orchestra residential course. “She also received a scholarship for the ProCorda chamber music course in 2018 and then had full scholarships for the ProCorda courses since then.
“In 2019, Aglaïa played as a guest soloist at the
Crawley Downs Ladies’ choir Christmas concert. She was also invited to play cello at ProCorda’s 50th-anniversary concert in a piano trio at St George’s Hall.
“As well as the Saint-Saens, the orchestra will also be performing Wagner’s Tannhauser Overture, Khachaturian’s theme from Spartacus and Beethoven’s fifth symphony.
“This was to have been performed in 2020 to mark the composer’s 250th anniversary but Covid intervened.”
