Prizes are in good supply at Piltdown

Piltdown Golf Club’s annual Lewis Taylor Trophy competition took place lin perfect spring golfing conditions.

Played for the first time in 1999, it was the brainchild of Moira Taylor and the late Charles Lewis, who wanted to encourage members to play golf over the Easter weekend in a format that was flexible, fun and competitive.

It takes place over four days and rewards the male golfer who scores the highest number of Stableford points from his best three scores with the Lewis Trophy and the female golfer who achieves the same with the Taylor Trophy.

This year the Taylor was won by Julie Scala with 40 points in the foursomes, 47 in the fourball betterball and another 47 in the greensomes giving her a total of 134, 13 clear of runner-up Judith Eggers, who scored an excellent 121.

David Munro claimed the Lewis Trophy with 39 points in the foursomes, 45 in the singles and 47 in the greensomes for a total of 131. Joint runners-up were Martin Copperwheat and Simon Bulteel with 126 points.

The juniors competed for the inaugural Ross Trophy, set up by Peter and Juliet Ross in memory of son Anthony.

The juniors were paired with club members selected by scratch team captain Peter Barrett and again in pleasant golfing conditions, Team Rossy won 5-2.

“Anthony would have so enjoyed seeing the juniors and the scratch team playing together,” said Peter and Juliet. “The day has meant so much and we sincerely thank Piers Heagerty for putting the competition together.”
