Mid Sussex has exciting events for the Jubilee

The Queen’s Speech is one of the most important days in Parliament as the government sets out its new legislativ­e agenda, and it was an honour to hear HRH Princes Charles outline the government’s agenda for this Parliament­ary Session. Very sadly we could not be joined by Her Majesty The Queen on this occasion. We look forward to celebratin­g her Platinum Jubilee and many exciting events are planned across Mid Sussex.

We’re ready to take some crucial steps over the next two years, including our economic recovery from the pandemic, the cost of living challenge, leading the fight against climate change and continuing our Global Britain focus.

On Victory Day in Russia, It was good to see the Defence Secretary give a speech at the National Army Museum in London on the Kremlin’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, criticisin­g the Kremlin and its military leaders, making it clear they must face the consequenc­es for their deplorable actions in Ukraine.

This week we announced we are expanding our Pension Credit campaign, as we work to ensure more people who are eligible receive an average of £3,300 in extra support they are entitled to.

This comes after we increased the basic State Pension by 3.1 per cent and the Pension Credit rate from April 1, 2022 – on top of our £9.1billion package to help households with their energy bills – to give direct crucial support with the cost of living.

It was fantastic to visit the new site of St Catherine’s hospice in Pease Pottage. It was incredibly heartening to hear how it is expanding to help even more people across Sussex.

Talking about death has always been one of the subjects we try to avoid, but it is important to have these conversati­ons to enable us all to have as positive an end of life as possible, whether it is a terminal prognosis, or to know our loved ones wishes regarding organ transplant­s, once life has ceased, which benefits so many.

It was great to visit the Caravan and Motorhome Club in East Grinstead-the largest private employer in the town, who gave a great insight into the service they offer their masses of members.

It was also fabulous to meet with the Stone Quarry Café and Fridge Crew led by Sarah and to see its new permanent home. It provide a great service to their local community. I applaud the volunteers who make this work so well.

An IPSOS survey revealed, worryingly, that 80 per cent of women have experience­d sexual harassment in public spaces.

Loreal Paris and the Suzy Lampugh Trust have launched StandUP Against Street Harassment Campaign.
