Keeper Walsh claims top award

Albion goalkeeper Megan Walsh picked up two prestigiou­s awards as her brilliant form in the Women’s Super League was recognised at the Players’ Awards at the Amex on Monday.

The Republic of Ireland internatio­nal picked up both the Player of the Season, sponsored by Fileder Filter Systems, and Players’ Player of the Season, sponsored by SnickersUK.com, at the ceremony which was attended by 400 players, guests and sponsors.

Walsh’s consistent form earned her a first internatio­nal call-up and she missed just two of Albion’s WSL matches.

Megan said, “I’m really honoured to win these two awards. I’m thankful for the support of my team-mates on and off the pitch and I think the awards recognise the hard work everyone puts in. It’s been great to have the fans back as well, they give us the energy to push on.”

The Women’s Young Player of the Season, sponsored by SYH Properties, was awarded to defender Maya Le Tissier, who was an ever present throughout the WSL season. The 20-year-old was also a regular in the England under-21s squad.

Maya said, “I’ve really enjoyed the season personally and I appreciate all the support I get from the other girls and the coaching staff, led by Hope [Powell].”

The Women’s Goal of the Season went to Maisie Symonds who opened her account for the club with a stoppage-time free kick whichseale­da1-0winagains­t Leicester City at the Amex.

Maisie said, “I will probably remember the celebratio­ns more than the goal itself, but it was a special moment. I’m honoured to win the award.”
