Young Harriers trio selected for Sussex

Three young Haywards Heath Harriers athletes have been selected to compete for Sussex in the indoor sports hall South East Counties Championsh­ips at Burgess Hill.

Charlie Stay and George Plenty both have been selected fortheunde­r-13agegroup­and Ethan Rowen in the under-11 age group.

Mike Bale competed the BMAF Winter Throws Championsh­ips at Horspath, Oxfordshir­e in the veteran men’s 65 age group on sunday, march 5.

He said: “It was a freezing cold day, temperatur­e barely above zero, in fact there was a light snow for a couple of minutes as I left the hotel.

“Everyone’s distance were down, probably circa three metres in the long throws and one metre in the short throws. Hence the disappoint­ing distance, although same for everyone.”

Mike took a silver in the hammer (29.88m), bronze in the di sc us(25.80m) and a silver in weight (11.45m).

Youngster Charlie Stay competed in the sussex indoor Athletics Championsh­ips at Carshalton over the weekend of March 4.

He competed in the under -1560 metres race and finished in a time of 8.81 seconds.

Jessica Diack also broke her harriers’ club record in the under 13 pole vault harrier’ s at Lewes on February 25.

Her vault of 1m 61cm saw her break her own record by 16cm.

Student Lio Robinson, competed in the BUCS Athletics Indoor Championsh­ips in Sheffield on February 24.

Running in 60m heats, he finished in seventh place, breaking his under -20 Harriers record in the process by recording a time on 7.55 seconds.

In the Eastbourne Half Marathon on March 5, Curtis Mcneice finished in 51st place in a time of 1:32:10.

Daniel Moll-morgan finished in 11th place in the Leith Hill Half Marathon, finishing the hilly course in 1:29:18. this race started from dork in ga nd is one of the hilliest in South East England.

Charlie Carr also ran the same half marathon and finished in 1:45:38.

Tim Hicks and James Bennett both competed in the Dartford Half on March 5.

James finished ahead of Tim in a time of 1:34:25. Tim finished in 1:42:56

Arun Khursheed finished in 39 th place in the english national Cross-country Championsh­ip son February 25 at Boles worth castle inches hire.

Competing in his final race for the club in the under-15 boys age group he finished in a time of 15:46.

Arun joins fellow Harrier Jonathan Beckett at Brighton & Hove Athletic Club.

The last of the sussex cross country league races was held at Stanmer Park, Brighton on February 11.

The Harriers had a very depleted team across all age groups and recorded their poorest results for perhaps many years.

Khurs heed was the highest finish er for the harriers in second place in the under -15 boys age group.

Tim Hicks won a super bronze medal in the vet men’s 60 age group over the whole cross-country season of league races.

Results were as follows: Under-11 boys: 12th, Ethan Rowen 8:56; 20th, Caspar Roderick 9:24; 23rd, Harley Mills 9:27; 39th, Marcos Selby 9:54; 47th, Rohan Barnes 10:31.

Under-13boys:25th, Charlie Waller 13:47. Under-15 boys: Second, Arun Khursheed 14:41. Senior women: 49th, Sam Rid ley 25:27;50 th, li nd seyb lain 25:29;66th,jaynebrewe­r27:18; 80th, Jacqueline Barnes 30:09; 85th, Sarah Hamilton 32:35.

In Division Two, the Harriers seniorwome­n’ s a team finished in sixth place, while theb team and C team came in 16th and 21st respective­ly.

In the women’ s vets league the Harrier’s team came sixth place overall.

Senior men: 12th, Chris Turner 30:15; 31st, Jamie Topping 32:00; 49th, Russ Mullen 33:41; 73rd, Greg Hilton 37:23; 85th, Tim Hicks 40:15.

A team finished in fifth place after the final league race in division One.

In Division Two, the Harriers B team were 11 than dC team were 21st.

In the Men’s Vets League, the Harriers finished fourth overall.

Burgess Hill Runners It was the return of another Burgess hill runners favourite this week, the steyning sting er Mar at hon,30k and half marathon.

Organised by the Steyning Athletics Club, the Steyning Stinger is not known for being a PB course.

It's a hilly cross-country run through the South Downs between Steyning, Storringto­n and Shoreham-by-sea.

In the Half, Neil and Kirsty Phillpot were first for Burgess Hill runners, both finishing in 2:02:21.

They were followed by Andrew Bishop (2:06:29), Chris Page (2:24:34), Chania Hemsley-smith (2:30:18), Simon Thompson (2:31:18) and Jayne Leaney (2:37:42).

Phil and Kath Wallek completed the 30k course, finishing in 2:41:10 and 3:06:18 respective­ly. And in the Marathon, Mark Nicholls was first for BHR in 3:37:05.

He was followed by Jamie Goodhead (3:56:34) and Oliver Day (4:20:32).

In another local race, Annette Maynard, Helen Pratt and Matt Wilson took part in the Eastbourne Half Marathon, a community focussed event that aims to raise money for charities and local causes.

Annette was first for Burgess hill runner sin 1:47:05, followed by matt wilson (2:22:57) and Helen Pratt (2:45:45).

Elsewhere, Yasmine Allfrey ran the Dartford Half Marathon in 1:53:06, and Bill Whitehead the Cambridge Half Marathon in 2:08:25.
