Sussex air shooters have made a fabulous start to the winter inter-county season with each of the three teams heading their divisions at the halfway stage.

The Sussex Air Rifle team lead Division 1 of the 10m air rifle league after winning all five opening matches, two points ahead of Bedfordshi­re who they beat 1297-1255.

Isabel Moore scored 288 and Marie Luke (Southwick) 286. Luke is the team top shot, averaging 280.6.

The Air Pistol teams are also flying high with Sussex winning their first five matches in Division 1 of the 20-yard air pistol league including a narrow win against 2nd placed Devon A, aided by high scores from Cuckfield’s Nick Harvey and Uckfield Homeguard’s Mark Burdass who both scored 188.

Burdass has the highest average in the Sussex team, 187.6.

In division one of the10m Air Pistol league, Sussex are level on points with Cumbria and Northumber­land, who they defeated 1374-1355.

A defeat to Lancaster A leaves them the only Sussex air team to lose so far this winter. East Grinstead’s Mike Arditi is top shot with an average of 280.2, one point ahead of teammate Mark Burdass (Uckfield Homeguard).

The Sussex lightweigh­t sporting rifle teams have not fared quite so well. The A team are third. Uckfield Homeguard’s Robin Brown leads the Sussex team’s averages with 196. Nick Harvey (Cuckfield) is on 193.17.

The B team, in division 3 of the inter-county lightweigh­t sporting rifle league are second. Zoe Mepham (Uckfield Homeguard) leads the Sussex averages with 187.83, ahead of Steve Farrant on 185.5.
