Defeat can’t spoil spirited end to the season

Ladies’ Hockey

Burgess Hill 4s 1

Worthing 3s 3

The last league match of the season was played with great spirit by both teams.

Thirteen-year-old rookies Lily Schruers and Tilly Taylor settled well into the defence with Cassia Riorda up front.

The match was end to end with the Hill defence standing firm.

Amerio, Sabine Rowen and Wendy Caddye all went close but it was 0-0 at halftime.

It stayed that way until Jill Brotherton scored Hill’s goal by her extended stick - barely connecting with a ball from Sally Nakajima, which left the keeper wrongfooted.

Worthing then attacked hard and eventually Hill succumbed to the pressure and Worthing scored three goals in the last 15 minutes.

There was an historical note to proceedings – Brotherton, Caddye, Rose Griffiths, Sue Norman and Chris

Mclellan, whose combined ages are 350 years, played in this match.

Brotherton’s mother, Enid Saunders, was a founder member of the club and the club is celebrating its 75th anniversary on Saturday, April 22 with a hockey tournament at The Triangle.

With the very wet March we’ve had, golf has been put on the backburner for regular players, but not for a few ladies, who have used their winter very productively.

As signatories to the Women in Golf Charter, Piltdown committed to encouraging more women to take up golf and Saturday was the last group lesson of our inaugural Winter Foundation Course, during which 12 new players learned the game.

The feedback was unanimously positive: they loved the course, made new friends and all will carry on learning golf through the academy. Piltdown now look forward to its Summer Foundation Course starting on Saturday.
