Exciting shield final is won by Hill stars

- By Roy Tucknott

The Mid Sussex Billiards and Snooker League Wednesday Shield Final brought together local rivals Burgess Hill Constitutional Club A and Hassocks F, and the enthusiastic audience at the Lindfield Club were treated to extremely close finishes and competitive frames.

The first frame saw both players start scoring heavily as they put away the pink and black balls each time they potted a red.

As the frame progressed the lion-hearted Jon Lang found much luck going against him with two cue balls going in after making a pot. He lost points following three “miss” calls, then with the final pink and black remaining he potted the pink which would have secured the win, but once again the cue ball entered the pocket.

Throughout the frame, Hassocks’ Paul Hickman remained calm and took the black to claim the frame 5956, Lang gave away 29 foul points against Hickman’s six.

The gladiator Paul Gladding was determined to gain the equaliser for Burgess Hill, however the mighty Mike Robertson edged the early stages. And with the final colours remaining, Gladding required to gain one snooker which he secured then to take the frame to a black ball finish, after numerous attempts by both players, Gladding potted to win 58-55.

The ambitious Adam

Parsons shone and led in the early stages of the frame. The frame turned against him when having potted a red he saw the black ball also entering the pocket.

With the black being placed back on its spot, he found the cue ball situated behind the black giving him a tough snooker to tackle. At this point the majestic Kevin Myles started to gain form, and he progressed to win 6349 thus giving Burgess Hill a 2-1 lead. Hassocks’ stylish James Mills opened brightly to take an early lead, but he was up against tough nut to crack Richard Hilton, who dug in to claw back the deficit to secure a black-ball tie. The respot black saw Hilton keeping his bottle to win 5144, clinching a 3-1 victory.

Hill wizard Tim Wright and Hassocks dynamo Dave Perry did not get to play. Referee was Jason Mamoany, Roy Tucknott scored.
