Victory shows Burgess Hill ladies are improving fast
Ladies’ Hockey Burgess Hill 4ths 3 South Downs 3rds 0 Against a team that previously beat them convincingly, the Burgess Hill ladies fours showed how much they have improved over the season.
Their team featured six players under 16 and four back-to-hockey players.
Isla Munden did not touch the ball throughout the match, with Rose Griffiths
and Sarah Bailey never troubled at the back and Tilly Taylor and Grace Blore controlling the right and left sides of the defence respectively.
Izzy Franklin worked hard on the right with support from Mia Thatcher, but the first goal came when Torrie Duffy drove up the right wing and delivered the ball into the penalty spot for Cath Donovan to put away.
Hill, despite increasing the pressure, frustratingly failed to convert a series of short corners.
After half-time South Downs had 10 minutes of pressure on the Hill defence but were unable to equalise.
Then Donovan got her second goal, picking up a long ball by Rebecca HarmanSmith at centre mid and driving it past the keeper.
In the last 10 minutes Caddye
then pushed up from defence and her free hit just outside the D was accurately delivered to Meares, who found Schruers on the post – and she put the ball past the keeper with ease.
