A blooming marvel
TUCKED away in a quiet cul-de-sac in Stockton is this stunning floral marvel.
Featuring a host of blooms including gladioli, busy lizzies, begonias, fuschias and buddleias, the gorgeous display delights locals.
The hidden gem on Wensley Road in the Grangefield area is a labour of love for pensioner Billy Harrington.
During the summer, the 68-year-old dad and grandfather devotes most of his day to tending to the displays.
Watering takes up to three hours, before he starts on the dead-heading. On an evening, he and his wife Linda enjoy sitting out and admiring the results of his work.
As well providing a much-loved hobby in his retirement, caring for the garden is also a distraction from his illnesses.
Billy suffers from diabetes and was last year diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Despite this, he maintains a positive outlook and says his garden stops him “moping about things”.
“I can’t walk very far but the garden has kept me motivated,” he said.
“I hope it will inspire other people who are in a similar position to keep busy with something they enjoy.
“It’s taken some time and it’s been quite intense but it does you the world of good.
“I do it all at my own pace. I’ll do a bit and sit down, do another bit and sit down.”
