Trio get call-up to GB squad

THREE Teesside Amer­i­can foot­ball play­ers have been selected for the na­tional team.

Jade Leighton, Becky Martin and Siob­han Henry showed their class against the best play­ers in the coun­try at the tri­als day in Leeds, with Great Bri­tain look­ing at play­ers for their women’s in­ter­na­tional friendly against Spain in Lon­don next month.

After a long four day wait to find out the good news, Siob­han said: “I re­ally wanted to make the squad. I didn’t think I would be in with a chance un­til I got picked.”

The trio, who have all played for Teesside Steel­ers, im­pressed as part of the North­ern Bl­iz­zard team which played in a full con­tact North v South game to earn a spot at the tri­als.

Teesside Uni­ver­sity stu­dent, Becky al­ready has four na­tional caps, while Jade from Thorn­aby and Siob­han of Billing­ham will be making their de­buts and they will be hope to rep­re­sent GB at next year’s World Cham­pi­onships.

Bev Mar­wood of Stock­ton has taken up the role of Team GB sports sci­ence and med­i­cal co­or­di­na­tor, while Aishah Waithe of Stokesley is as­sis­tant man­ager.
