Trio get call-up to GB squad
THREE Teesside American football players have been selected for the national team.
Jade Leighton, Becky Martin and Siobhan Henry showed their class against the best players in the country at the trials day in Leeds, with Great Britain looking at players for their women’s international friendly against Spain in London next month.
After a long four day wait to find out the good news, Siobhan said: “I really wanted to make the squad. I didn’t think I would be in with a chance until I got picked.”
The trio, who have all played for Teesside Steelers, impressed as part of the Northern Blizzard team which played in a full contact North v South game to earn a spot at the trials.
Teesside University student, Becky already has four national caps, while Jade from Thornaby and Siobhan of Billingham will be making their debuts and they will be hope to represent GB at next year’s World Championships.
Bev Marwood of Stockton has taken up the role of Team GB sports science and medical coordinator, while Aishah Waithe of Stokesley is assistant manager.
