Onesies on and ready to run!

Middlesbrough Herald & Post - - HERALD & POST -

DRAGGING yourself out of bed every Sunday morning to run 2k takes some dedication – especially for teenagers.

And dedicated as they are, the kids who run the Hemlington Junior Parkrun each week normally put on their finest running clobber for the occasion.

But this week, you would be forgiven for thinking everyone had set their alarms too late, as scores of nippers ran around Hemlington Lake in their pyjamas.

Since August, the Hemlington Junior Park Run has been held every Sunday at 9am.

The free, timed, 2k run around Hemlington Lake, for kids aged 4-14, is getting more popular by the week and has seen a steady increase in people taking part.

This week, for a bit of a change, the run’s organisers encouraged volunteers and runners to wear their pyjamas or a onesie for the fun event.

Building on the success of parkruns – open to both adults and children – at Stewart Park and Albert Park, last year Middlesbrough Council allocated £3,000 from its public health budget to fund the Hemlington event.

Speaking at the time, a council spokesman said: “Middlesbrough already hosts two very popular parkruns at Albert Park and Stewart Park, which are well attended by people of all ages and all running abilities.

“The Hemlington Junior Parkrun aims to be a fun way of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle from a young age and so we are pleased that anyone aged 4-14 will be able to take part free of charge.

“We hope that in time it will be as popular as the other weekly running events in town and inspires Middlesbrough’s younger generation towards a healthy lifestyle.”

Parents are able to accompany their children on the route if necessary, and rewards are offered as an incentive for achieving landmarks in the number of events they take part in.
