A former library is set to be transformed into a GP surgery, with the possibility of creating jobs.

Thornaby Library, on Westbury Street in the town, will be turned into a GP practice and will be part of Elm Tree Surgery, which already has a building on the street.

Plans for the development have been approved subject to conditions by Stockton Council and work has already begun on creating the new sur- gery. The practice currently employs five members of staff and a further seven employees could be hired once the new surgery opens – although it’s uncertain what roles will need to be filled.

The conversion of the former library will also include a minor surgical unit, a single storey extension and the installation of two windows and external alterations.

The development has been permit- ted as long as no construction activity takes place on the site outside the hours of 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturday.

No construction work will be carried out on Sundays or Bank Holidays, to avoid excessive noise and disturbance to occupants of nearby premises.

Once completed, the practice will be open from Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturdays from 8am to noon.
