Row over town fair
A BITTER row has broken out between the new Tees Mayor and Yarm Town Council over the future of the historic Yarm Fair.
Tory Ben Houchen, elected in May, called the town council “incompetent” after large parts of the recent Yarm Gala were cancelled due to safety concerns.
He has demanded a guarantee that the 143-year-old Yarm Fair will now go ahead in October.
Live music and a funfair at the Gala, which is organised by the Town Council and held annually on the High Street’s cobbles, were cancelled due to problems raised by health and safety experts.
But hitting back, Councillor Jason Hadlow, the chair of the recreation committee responsible for Yarm events, said: “You’d think he’d check his facts before putting out a press release like this.“Yarm Town Council are rightly proud of their history and heritage and will work diligently to deliver its ‘Crown Jewel’, Yarm Fair, this year.”
