Pip is bigger and better than ever!
THE hugely popular Orange Pip Market returned once again at the weekend – and this time it was bigger and better than ever.
This month’s instalment of the market hosted 44 food stalls alongside a range of artists, musicians and the return of Car Boot Disco Bingo, which is a cross between bingo and a dance lesson with prizes bought at car boot sales handed to the winners.
Following last month’s Summer Special on Centre Square in Middlesbrough, the event returned to Baker and Bedford Street on Saturday and stretched out on to Albert Road for the first time.
It has become something of a victim of its own success, resulting in packed streets and access difficulties for wheelchairs, buggies and mobility scooters. The stretch of Albert Road between Borough Road and Grange Road was closed, with traffic rerouted via Grange Road on to Linthorpe Road in order to cope with the crowds the market brings in.
Cllr Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for City Centre Strategy, said: “Orange Pip Market keeps going from strength to strength and expanding on to Albert Road couldn’t be a clearer sign of its increasing popularity.
“It’s also worth remembering Orange Pip isn’t just a great day out for thousands of people, it is also contributing massively to the local economy and changing perceptions about Middlesbrough.”
