Young Mohawks shine
FOUR Tees Valley Mohawks have made the final 12 for the North East of England Under-15 squad.
After five weeks of try outs involving over 45 players it was the Mohawk players who impressed the coaching staff and have made the final squad.
Chairman of the club Steve Butler said: “To have one third of the players of North East England team coming from the Mohawks is a incredible.
All four guys thoroughly deserve it and its their hard work, effort, dedication and passion for the sport which has helped them to showcase their talents on the court, I’m so proud of all the players and are looking forward to seeing them perform against the best in the country.”
The Mohawks players were Jake Butler, Jack Winter, Elliott Gibson and Daniel Kelsey. Daniel Kelsey was the only one to make the squad last year but is very happy to have three of his teammates in the squad this year.
He said: “We have all trained exceptional hard this year and I believe we all deserved this chance. It will be a good tournament and I’m looking forward to it.”
The club’s achievements don’t stop there though as two of it players also made the final 12 of the North East England Under-17 squad for the first time ever.
Brynley Hudson and Killian Bousfield made the cut for their age group which is another fantastic achievement for the squad as both played Under-15 last year and have another year at this level.
Coach Butler added: “This was a very tough age group to get in, over 40 players tried out and there was a lot of very talented players to choose from so I’m very proud of the guys for getting into the team.”
The Under-17 tournament is held at the same place in Manchester on the same September weekend as the Under-15 so that will be six Mohawks players representing their teams throughout the weekend.
Coach Butler added: “This club is getting the recognition is deserve. As coaches we are working hard to improve and make these players better every time they step onto the court by teaching them the skills required to be the best their can be.
“Throughout all the North-east teams performing this summer we have now had 13 players representing the North East of England teams in their age group from Under-11 boys and Girls, Under 13 boys and now Under-15 and Under-17 boys teams which is a fantastic achievement.”
