Best of the bunch
CROCUS TOMMASINIANUS LOVELY to see early crocuses in bloom this week, their vivid purple blooms shivering in the snow. Affectionately known as tommies, these are easy to grow bulbs which self-seed and freely naturalise. Plant in autumn a couple of inches deep in scattered drifts. If you are letting them spread in lawns, which looks delightful, don’t mow the grass until their leaves are dying back. Native to the woodlands of southeastern Europe, they will do best in sunshine, perhaps under deciduous trees. The main problem will be squirrels, who are partial to digging them up and eating them.
