Kilshaw pulls off Great Escape
ALAN Kilshaw’s final act as Rochdale Hornets coach was to secure Championship rugby for the club in 2019.
Hornets’ Great Escape was completed on Sunday when they beat Sheffield Eagles 32-22 while Swinton Lions went down at Batley.
“It’s been a strange year, an up and down year but to leave the club in the Championship, to get that high after so many lows, I’m very proud of the team,” said Kilshaw.
“It was a tough effort. Everyone to a man put it in on the day. We make it hard at times but once we got into the lead we were never behind.
“We’d spoken all week about finding a way to win and we did that.
“The lads deserve it, they have been through the ringer this year. We had three games in a row where we had London, Toulouse and Featherstone and we shipped a lot of points and everyone wrote us off.
“There was a lot of negativity around.
“But the lads have been consistent, we have not been getting battered every week and we showed that in the Shield.
“I think we could have picked up more wins in the Shield, we’ve been unlucky here and there, but we’ve done enough, winning the last two games and the record books will show that we are staying up.”
