Team’s appeal to get youngsters to big game

Middleton Guardian - - CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH-ON - EMMA CURRY

AFOOTBALL team for youngsters is raising thousands of pounds to take 120 children to watch a Premier League football team.

Middleton Colts Football Academy needs more than £3,000 for a Christmas trip to a Manchester City v Crystal Palace game on December 22.

Jonny Munson, who plays for the adults’ team, launched Middleton Colts at St Anne’s Academy less than 18 months ago and has watched the club go from strength to strength.

It has grown in size, now catering for 150 youngsters, with 16 teams for ages ranging from four to 11 years old.

Last Christmas, 31-year-old Jonny, from Middleton, decided to give the boys a treat and took them to a Manchester City match.

Then only 54 children took part, but this year Jonny is offering the opportunity again and 120 youngsters want to go

He created a Go Fund Me page which raised £1,400 in three weeks, and the team have also held ‘dads v dads’ tournaments, in which each parent raised between £20 and £100 for the cause.

Altogether, the Colts have raised around £2,450, which has paid for the tickets for all 120 boys and the 35 adults going with them – now they just need the funds to cover transport to the game, which has been quoted at £595.

Jonny said: “I did this because I believe everyone should have the opportunity to watch a Premier League game.

“Middleton isn’t a very well off area and £3 to one person is a meal to someone else.

“For some of these children it will be their first ever football match.

“We are all about the children at Middleton Colts and I think that’s why we have had the success we have had in such a short time.

“We use Manchester City as they are a family club and have been more than accommodating and gave us some discount as well.

“We go to the game for club bonding, whatever team you support, it’s just a nice day out just before Christmas for all the boys to enjoy themselves – front row at a Manchester City match with 126 kids and 35 plus adults.”

The Go Fund Me page is now closed and the team hopes to raise the funds for transport through subs and sponsors. Cash donations can still be received at the club’s sponsor businesses, Salvage Barbers and Pearson Ferrier estate agents in Middleton and Middleton Market’s reception.
